Volunteering at City Mission

Volunteers are vital and valuable partners at City Mission. In 2006, volunteers donated almost 20,000 hours of time serving others.

There are many volunteers opportunities listed on the following pages. If you are interested in volunteering, please click on one of the links to find out how. Individual Volunteers

Individuals can volunteer on a one time or ongoing basis.

Ongoing opportunities include: tutoring, mentoring, big brother/big sister, adopt-a-grandparent, and clothing boutique assistant.

For ongoing opportunities, please print out and return a Volunteer Application Form or contact Michelle Shelard, Volunteer Coordinator at 346-2275 ext. 310

One time or seasonal opportunities include: Holiday meal food server, Christmas toy store assistant, and Summer Youth Adventure Counselor.

Service Learning

City Mission provides volunteer projects for students needing to complete volunteer hours for school classes and honor societies.

Students can choose individual or group projects listed here, or students can offer project ideas. City Mission staff will tailor projects based on the needs of the students and the availability of resources at City Mission.

Groups

Volunteer opportunities for groups include:

Ongoing:

  • Serving Community Meal

    • Day: Saturday

    • Time: 2:45 – 4:00 pm

    • Volunteers needed: 8-10

    • Location: Wallace Campbell Dining Center

    • 512 Smith Street, Schenectady

  • Cleaning Dining Center

    • Day: Saturday

    • Time: 9:00 – 11:00 am

    • Volunteers needed: 10 – 15

    • Location: Wallace Campbell Dining Center

    • 512 Smith Street, Schenectady

  • Cleaning Kitchen

    • Day: Weeknight

    • Time: 7:30 – 11:00 pm

    • Volunteers needed: 6-8

    • Location: Wallace Campbell Dining Center

    • 512 Smith Street, Schenectady

  • Drives: Groups collect needed items off-site and bring to City Mission.

    • Types of drives include:

      • Personal care items for men, women, and children

      • Diapers and wipes

      • Clothing

      • School supplies

      • Winter items

      • Children’s toys for Christmas toy store

      • Non-perishable food items

      • Small household appliances

Seasonal:

  • Clothing Drives

    • Day: 3rd Saturday of month, April – October

    • Time: 8:30 am – 12:30 pm

    • Volunteers needed: 5+

  • Landscaping, shoveling, raking, gardening

Corporate Partnerships

City Mission offers team building projects and off-site meeting facilities in downtown Schenectady.

Meeting facilities include:

  • Small meeting room for up to 40 people

  • Large meeting room for up to 120 people

  • Media screen/DVD player in large room

  • Sound system in both rooms

Availability:

  • Small meeting room

    • August – June

    • Time: Day and Evening

    • Meals and refreshments can be provided upon request

  • Large meeting room

    • August – June

    • Time: 9:00 – 11:00 am, 1:00 – 3:00 pm

    • Refreshments can be provided upon request

Team building projects vary based on the needs of the Mission and goals of the team. Past projects include: serving meals, landscaping, apartment renovations/construction, and holiday preparations.
