Our Mission

The City Mission of Schenectady, founded in 1906, is dedicated to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed. The ministries are seeking to comprehensively meet the needs of the poor in a manner that dignifies and strengthens the individual, the family, and the community.

City Mission does not receive any government funds. We depend entirely upon the contributions of concerned individuals, churches and businesses. All contributions are tax-deductible.

Food Services Program

The Food Services Program provides 3 meals a day to City Mission residents, and dinner meals for the community. Bagged meals and food boxes are available in emergency situations.

Community Outreach

The Community Outreach Department Assists individuals and families in the community with basic needs of food, clothing and household items. Offers training seminars in parenting and family life, as well as resources and referrals. Hosts annual “Coats for Kids,” Christmas Toy Distribution and Back 2 School Boost.

Outreach program to youth, teens and parents in Hamilton Hill Community including: clubs, Bible studies, tutoring and mentoring. Summer day camp program offers recreation, field trips, arts & crafts, camping, and educational activities.

Men’s Programs

Emergency Shelter

66-bed dormitory provides emergency shelter, and other basic needs for homeless men. “Powerline Connection” offers opportunities for personal and spiritual growth.

Discipleship Program

Both one year and 90-day rehabilitation programs includes counseling, Bible study, Chapel, vocational training, job readiness and life skills training.

Women and Children Programs

Family Life Center

37-bed shelter for women and children, and an Emergency Shelter for women. Provides a place of refuge for those in need, as well as opportunities for life change.

Life Skills Training Center

Training in essential life skills for City Mission and community residents. Includes Home Management Center, Innovative Learning Center, Phoebe's Place, and workshops in nutrition, parenting, and workplace readiness.

Transitional Housing

The Transitional Housing Program provides City Mission graduates an opportunity to continue their growth amidst the supportive environment of the City Mission campus. Assigned Life Coaches assist clients in their transition to full independence.

Learning & Career Center

The Learning and Career Center program offers computer based academic tutorials through 7 computer work stations. Provides classes in literacy, budgeting, GED preparation, and career planning. Also offers on-the-job training opportunities.

Chapel

Provide spiritual nourishment for residents through Jesus Christ by offering Friday morning and Sunday evening services, as well as morning devotions.

Thrift Stores

2 Thrift Stores located at 313 Clinton Street, Schenectady and at 416 Saratoga Rd. (Route 50), Glenville; sell donated furniture, clothing, housewares, appliances, shoes, books, and toys to support the ministries of the Mission.

18,000 sq. ft. Distribution Center facilities provides vocational training and employment opportunities.

Donated items are processed for use in Community Outreach, the Thrift Stores and clothing salvage operation.

Medical Clinic

Physicians from the Family Practice Residency Program at St. Clare’s Hospital provide free medical care on Wednesdays from 5 to 7 PM at the Mission.

Volunteer Participation

Volunteers help year round with in a variety of capacities: Serving meals, preparing food boxes, mentoring, and assisting with special events, are just a few of the fulfilling volunteer opportunities available.
